Introduction
What this is all about |
It seems to be a lot more popular these days to take time away from the burden of work and bills to do something a little more exciting. For us this adventure and escape comes in the form of spending 12 months in a hot, noisy, dusty Land Rover. So we are planning to drive down the East coast of Africa from Gloucester (England) to Cape Town (South Africa), via the length of Europe and a toe into the Middle East. |
There will be just the two of us making the trip, along with Gweneveer, our trusty Land Rover Defender. Like many people we do not have a small fortune to make this expedition possible and matched with the requirement to learn how to work on the Land Rover, we are doing the bulk of the preparation ourselves. |
To share our adventure with people we know and to allow others to gain advice, ideas and hopefully inspiration, we have developed this website. We are leaving in the middle of March 2009, therefore we will be adding to the main sections until this time, including adding reviews of the kit during and upon our return. |
Why? |
If you are a fellow overland dreamer, then you will be fully aware of others asking you why you would want to do such a thing. My feeling on the matter is simple, why not. We have never been sun seekers and couldn’t think of a worse type of holiday. We like to see where and how other cultures live, along with taking part in their chosen past times, adrenaline filled or otherwise. |
A few years back Katie and I had the wonderful opportunity to spend 5 months living in Cape Town, one of us working, the other topping up her tan and chatting up the homeless! The adventures and people we met during this time, including a brief trip to the Orange River in Namibia and a safari holiday in Zambia/Botswana, made us fall in love with such a varied nation. Even before our return we vowed to visit again, at the time not realising it would be in such an elaborate way. |
So why not just take a fortnights holiday? And I would agree, however we want to do something fantastic for us to tell the Grandkids. Many people simply have dreams that they never fulfil. This is one of our dreams and we will do all that we can to complete it. |
Life is for Living, Enjoy it whilst you can. |

Get In Contact |
We would love to hear from people, finding out what adventures you are planning or simply giving us some encouragement along our way. Rather than have a message board our main method of communication throughout our trip is email. So please email us at hughes@insearchofafrica.co.uk. |
