Diary - UK to Slovenia (19th Mar to 21st Mar)
The time has finally come for our 2 year dream to come true, we have finally left the UK. Filled with anticipation and excitement we have entered the unknown, some of us taking it more in their stride than others, having a little nap on the ferry from Dover. |
Right from the off we were in the spirit and uncertainty of travelling in foreign lands, getting confused with what pump to use at the petrol stations, using sparkling water for cups of tea (as our onboard water has frozen!) and the occasional delayed response to which side of the road we are meant to be on. However instantly travelling up to 300 + miles a day and not really leaving the Landy for 5+ hours, you soon settle in to it and learn the ways of the locals. |
The surprise highlight of the first few days was turning up in the wonderful little town of Obernai, 20km Southwest of Strasbourg. The town is why postcards were invented, beautiful old buildings that have lent so much over time that their roof edges now touch, plenty of Patisseries and Butchers, not forgetting Chocolatiers around every corner… Heaven! It both gave us the lift and reaffirmed why we are doing the trip, to see the hidden gems that nobody mentions. |
We had expected to love Austria and had planned on spending a few days exploring Austria and Innsbruck but we have been left rather disappointed. This could be because you only get about 30 seconds snippets at a time before vanishing into another tunnel. We also realised that playing the ‘Hold your breath through tunnel’ game is a bit dangerous as some are 9km in length. We did manage to look like complete tourists however in Innsbruck when trying to find some breakfast, identifying people carrying bakery bags we set about like Hansel and Gretel and followed the bags like bread crumbs, arriving at a lovely little place in the most obscure place. |
“The world is a book and those who do not travel ready only one page” going by this saying we are on chapter 5 with no idea of the story line and only a brief idea of the characters. This is highlighted on day 4 when we had breakfast in Austria; morning tea is Italy; lunch in Austria and finally dinner in Slovenia!! |
Since leaving the UK the weather has been freezing every night, even down to -3 for one of them, but being wrapped up in sleeping bags and duvet we have both slept well. Even the days have barely got more than 15C so for all those the laughed at our heated seats, then when you are eating dinner in thermals, hats, fleeces and coats they are simply priceless. |
