Introduction |
Mozambique is located on the south-eastern coast of Africa and is bordered by Tanzania to the North, South Africa and Swaziland to the South, Zimbabwe to the West and Zambia and Malawi to the northwest. Mozambique is often describe as one of Africa’s best kept secrets with its beautiful beaches and fascinating culture with wonderful artistic and musically traditions. The region is less developed that other parts of the continent especially countries like South Africa but the natural beauty and charm overcomes the generally more basic conditions. The southern half of the country is developing quickly with good roads, while the northern half you should allow more time to travel through as road conditions are poor and be prepared to rough it slightly more. |

People |
Despite the influence of Islamic coastal traders and European colonizers, the people of Mozambique have largely retained an indigenous culture based on small-scale agriculture. Mozambique's most highly developed art forms have been wood sculpture, for which the Makonde in northern Mozambique are particularly renowned, and dance. The middle and upper classes continue to be heavily influenced by the Portuguese colonial and linguistic heritage. Portuguese is the official and most widely spoken language of the nation, because Bantus speak several of their different languages (most widely used of these are Swahili, Shangaan. |

Food |
The traditional food crop in Mozambique is maize like many African countries and is eaten for most of their meals. The cooking style is a blend between African, Indian and Portuguese and is considered to have some of the best cuisine in Southern Africa. Being so close to the ocean sea-food is excellent and extremely fresh. All food is cooked over an open fire. Chickens are cooked over the open fire and then dissected for eating or the flesh made into a chicken dish that is often eaten with rice. Bananas and cashew nuts grow well so these are part of the local diet. |
