Overview |
Africa is notorious for bureaucracy, therefore I have decided to make sure that our paper work is water tight and that we have plenty of it. This is mainly due to the fact I do not fancy being stuck at a boarder for days because I have not brought the right information or being charged more money due to insufficient documentation. |
Due to the fact that we are going to be away for less than one year the vehicle needs to roadworthy under British Law. This means a valid MOT, Road Tax and UK insurance for the time we are away. We will be taking copies of these essential documents encase we lose any one the way. We are also scanning copies to keep on the lap top we are taking and another set with our parents. |
I have listed below the extra documentation on top of the Carnet De Passage that we will be taking. |
Personal Fact Sheet |
I have designed a personal fact sheet that contains all the information about us and our vehicle which maybe required at boarders and check points. We have also scanned a colour copy of our passports at the bottom. The plan behind this is that we can just hand it over to anyone at check points rather than our originals and not spend ages filling out the same information time and time again. We have also had the information translated into Arabic and French. |
International Driving Licence |
We will also be taking an International Driving Permit which is an internationally recognised document allowing the holder to drive a private motor vehicle without additional formality. Providing there is a full UK driving licence accompanying the International Driving Permit. This is not an essential document but as it only costs £5.50 from the post office or the RAC, we have decided to get one. As it may save time and make boarder crossings easier. |
Driving Licence |
We will be taking copies of our UK driving licences and laminating them. These can then use as extra ID’s at campsites or at boarder crossings. By handing over these copies hopefully in may cut down on bribes as we will not need to pay to get them back. |
International Certificate for Motor Vehicles |
ICMV is essential a passport for your vehicle. The document is an internationally recognised registration document, a multi-lingual version of the V5. We are getting ours from the RAC which costs approx £4. Though this is not usually a compulsory document but people have said that it can ease your way through borders – the more documents you have the more impressed people are! The vehicles V5 document must also be taken as well. |
V5 |
Contains important information about the vehicle and is a requirement. We have decided to photocopy’s our so that we have some spares and again we can just leave them with officials rather than paying to get in back |
