Preparation - Handy Hints and Tips
Introduction |
Advice and guidance can come in many forms and in many different formats. All is valuable in its own way as you learn something and therefore may benefit you at some point. We have taken advice and ideas from many different people and sources and have listed a few ideas below. |
Photos: One of my worse nightmares would be to lose our photos, so using some great advice from our Uncle will be being backing our photos not only onto our laptop, but also onto 2 CD’s. One copy will stay with us and the other will be posted back to the UK to Steve’s dad. The benefit of this is that hopefully we know that we have our photos safe in a number of places but also our family can see all our photos as we go and not have to look at 1000’s at least of photos when we get back. Well that’s what they think!! |
Personal Details: A special information document can be drawn up and photocopied zillions of times to hand out at border crossings and roadblocks, especially in the Sahara. This will save you having to write out the same details over and over again. The Bradt Africa by Road guidebook has a sample on page 267 but it should contain all the usual essential information, including name, address, passport number, date and place of birth, drivers licence number, mother and father's name, where going etc savings time and energy |
Head Torches: Great when carrying things and working on/under the landy and moving around the campsite, we have chosen Silva |
Wikipedia: Gives lat and long for anything in its database, ie dune 45 in namibia |
Passport Photo’s: Use the computer at home to make passport photos as will need approx 50-70 depending on the number of countries visited, rather than a photo booth to save money. |
Washing Clothes: Use a box to do washing in; just add water, soap and clothes; put the lid on a strap to the roof and drive! As the bumpy roads will give the clothes a good clean. |
Roof Lining: We have removed our roof lining in order to be able to use the beams of the roof, so that we can rivet in cargo nets to have more storage. We have also stuck roll mats to the roof insulate and cut down on air noise. This was only really necessary for us as we removed the sun roof sue to it leaking!! And therefore was a large hole left in the lining. Works brilliantly though. |
Driving licence: Photocopy and laminate driving licence to provide as ID at boards and campsites to stop having to pay to get them back. |
Berghaus Cups: Great cups that keep drinks warm for 45mins. |
France: You are now required to have a high vis jacket in the car when driving through France. The jacket can not be kept in the boot either |
Croatia: You are required by law to have your head lights on 24Hrs while driving |
