Introduction |
This has been one of my biggest headaches, trying to work out what each country requires and when best to apply and how and the costs |
Visa Obtained Before we left: |
We have decided to apply for a couple of visa in advance in the hope to make our lives easier for the first few months. Syria is the only visa that you must obtain in advance. |
Syria: Very Straight foward and easy: Took 4 days, Cost £32 for 3 months and valid from date of issue. Online application form to complete and then post off with 2 passport photos and letter from employer, confirming who you are. |
Egypt: Easy with less fuss; Passports back in 5 days, Cost £15 each. Requirements: Application form and 2 passport photo |
Visa on the way |
Turkey Visa cost 20US$ and insurance cost 41US$, check whether you UK insurance will cover you in Turkey first and remember your Green Card. |
Syria Visa we brought before hand and cost £20. Diesel tax 100US$, customs 10US$, Insurance 52US$ |
Jordan 22US$ leaving tax from Syria, 28.7 dinar for insurance, 20 Customs and visa 10 each. |
Egypt Visa we got before hand cost for £15 each. Diesel Tax 510EP, Insurance 515EP, licence plates 150EP, copies 30EP and 4x4 service 11EP. The process is actually very straight forward as a tourist policeman takes you through everything and he greets you when you leave the boat. The ferry and two people cost 360US$ Make sure you have a fire extinguisher as they will make you buy one others |
Also I would highly recommend making the effort to drive down to Abu Simbel even though you see it from the ferry, the detail inside is amazing, so the temple of Horse at Edfu between Luxor and Aswan is amazing. Our two best sites of Egypt. |
Sudan Visa cost 100US$, also had to pay the British embassy 240EP for an letter to get the visa (if in a group just pay for one and then photocopy at the Sudanese embassies to save money, as it is just printed off with no personal information on it.) 2450EP for the ferry for our 4x4 and 2 tickets in a first class cabin. Mr Salma is actually very reasonable the best advice is just to email him at least a few weeks before to let him know the date you are after and he will reserve the space for you. takourny@hotmail.com We did not get a response from him but he had reserved us on. Also we had to pay 25EP to get the carnet stamped out of Egypt and a total of 131US$ to get us two and the landy into Sudan. A fixer will find you on the boat and he will charge 15US$ per car for him to do all the work. |
Kenya The visa has been reduced from 50US$ to 25US$. There are no fees for carent and because we have the Yellow card insurance we do not need to buy insurance. They did not ask to see any information about it though. Road Tax is 40US$ for 1 Month or 100US$ for 3 Months, they may not ask for it when you enter from Ethiopia but will when you try to exit! |
Uganda The visa is 50US$ pp obtained on border, road tax 42,500Uganda shillings (About £14) The Yellow card covers you in Uganda so no need for extra insurance, even though the insurance company based there tried to tell us it was not valid!! |
